What are Lasers?
The word “laser” is actually an acronym for light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation. Essentially, these devices emit an amplified beam of light that can be modulated for different purposes. On one end of the spectrum, lasers can cut through steel; on the other end; they can be used to gently remove bacteria from teeth without damaging adjacent structures.
How are Lasers Used in Dentistry?
Lasers have found a wide range of uses in the dental field. These devices can be modified to higher intensities to cut through gums to facilitate tooth extractions, eliminate decay before inserting a filling, or used as a colorizing tool to improve healing times. At lower intensities, lasers can gently remove plaque and tartar without damaging a tooth or the surrounding gum tissue.
