What is a Tongue and Lip and Tie?

Between four and 11% of children are born with a tight band of tissue tying the tongue to the floor of the mouth; this is commonly referred to as a tongue tie. A lip tie occurs when the band of tissue that tethers the upper lip to the upper gum is larger than normal.

Although these conditions are not dangerous, they can lead to other health problems in the future. Some of the oral concerns associated with this phenomenon include:

  • Increased likelihood of childhood cavities
  • Gum disease
  • Jaw deformations
  • Orthodontic issues
  • Altered speech
  • Airway obstructions

The Risk of Sleep Apnea

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a common sleep disorder that affects adults and children. It occurs when the airway becomes partially or completely blocked during sleep, leading to breathing disruptions and decreased oxygen levels.

Tongue and Lip Ties' Role

Pediatric tongue and lip ties, characterized by restricted tongue and lip movement due to tight tissue attachments, can exacerbate or trigger OSA in children. Tongue ties hinder tongue placement during sleep, potentially blocking the airway. Lip ties can contribute to mouth breathing, further increasing the risk of airway obstruction.

Treatment Improves Outcomes

Early identification and treatment of tongue and lip ties by skilled pediatric dentists can enhance outcomes for children with sleep apnea. Simple procedures to release these ties improve oral function, promote proper tongue positioning during sleep, and reduce airway obstruction risks.

Addressing these ties can lead to better sleep quality, improved oxygen flow, and overall health, ensuring a brighter future for your child. If you are looking for a solution, we offer laser and oral appliance treatment. Come in for a visit to find out which is best for your child.
