What is PRF?
PRF stands for platelet-rich fibrin, a platelet concentrate that contains a high concentration of stem cells, platelets, leukocytes, immune cytokines and growth factors without the red blood cells. We obtain PRF by collecting a small amount of blood and spinning it at a low velocity in a medical centrifuge. This process separates the blood’s healing elements from the red blood cells which are then reinserted in the surgical wound where you need them most. Unlike PRP which contains chemicals like anticoagulants, PRF has nothing added, just YOUR blood!
What Are the Uses of PRF?
In dentistry, there are several applications for PRF:
- Tooth Extraction Sites
- Dental Implant Placement
- Periodontal Surgery
- Bone Grafting
- Sinus Surgery
- Cosmetic Dentistry
By precisely placing stem cells, healing factors and a wound scaffold, PRF promotes faster healing and wound stabilization in areas where the tissues need a healing boost or just do not want to heal.
PRF kickstarts this process in other parts of your body. This means PRF can be used to expedite healing not only after dental surgery, but it has medical applications and can be used as an anti-aging stimulant reducing wrinkles or placed over hard to heal diabetic wounds.
