What is a Tooth Extraction?
A tooth extraction is the complete removal of a tooth and root from a socket. Dr. Fotek will recommend this procedure as a last measure, when no other treatments will effectively save the tooth. Once the tooth has been removed, the tooth socket will be thoroughly cleaned out to remove any infection, remove the tooth ligament from the bone walls, the hole left behind will be flushed out with ozone and the site will be filled with PRF and/or bone to have a smooth painless healing experience.
What Situations Call for a Tooth Extraction?
Excessive tooth decay, chronically infected root canal, cracked tooth and advanced gum disease are the most common reasons for extractions. These problems, if left untreated, will eventually lead to infections that cause pain and possibly spread of the bacterial infection to the surrounding tissues. Tooth extraction will not only eliminate the source of infection and pain, it will stop it from spreading elsewhere.
If trauma or injury damages your teeth, they may also need to be extracted and replaced with an implant or other restorations.
