Effect of sleep apnea

In adults, oxidative stress from poor oxygenation while sleeping will lead to various heart conditions and this will be intensified in those who are overweight. Patients with sleep apnea are 2-4 times more likely to develop heart arrhythmias (abnormal heart rhythms) than people without this condition. Sleep apnea will increase the risk of heart failure over time by 140% and the risk of coronary heart disease by 30%. It is scary that poor sleep can actually kill you.  And not to mention,

In children, sleep apnea will lead to:

  • Behavioral issues
  • ADHD/Hyperactivity
  • Lack of concentration
  • Morning headache
  • Poor school performance
  • Poor weight gain
  • Bed wetting

What is NightLase®?

NightLase® from Fontona is a non-invasive laser therapy treatment meant to improve the symptoms felt due to sleep apnea. Dr. Fotek will use the laser to stimulate collagen production wihich will tighten the oral mucosa tissue. This will open up the patient’s airway, resulting in better sleep and reduced snoring.

How Does NightLase® Work?

This procedure is extremely safe due to the use of Fotona’s patented laser modality. It optimizes the length of the laser pulses, making it the perfect solution for treating the extremely sensitive oral region while still being able to generate enough heat to penetrate and stimulate the oral mucosa tissue.

Treatment will typically consist of three 20-minute sessions over six weeks, and the results are known to last for about a year. It has been shown to have immediate effects with up to 50% improvement after just one treatment. While this is something that will need to be touched up annually, you won’t have to use any breathing appliances as you sleep, making your nights much more comfortable.

Although NightLase is very effective in reducing snoring and the effects of sleep apnea, in many cases it will be necessary to take a more holistic approach to correcting sleep apnea or snoring. This will include making a variety of lifestyle changes, such as losing those extra few pounds, limiting or eliminating alcohol use, no more smoking, and most importantly, changing your diet.

What Are the Benefits of NightLase®?

  • Non-invasive treatment
  • Reduces snoring and lessens the effects of sleep apnea
  • Treatment consists of gently heating of oral mucosa
  • Many patients can eliminate their CPAP
  • Safe
  • Anesthetic is not required
