What is Sleep Monitoring?
Sleep apnea can be very dangerous, especially because many people aren’t even aware they have it. Luckily, increased awareness has led to more and more patients being tested and treated, but it’s estimated that only 10 percent who suffer from OSA are undergoing treatment.
If we suspect you have sleep apnea, we’ll provide you with an FDA-approved at-home test. The testing device will monitor your breathing as you sleep, and the dentist will review the data after just one night of testing. If the device shows multiple instances when you completely stop breathing in the middle of the night, we’ll recommend choosing a proven solution.
What Are the Symptoms of Sleep Apnea?
Since OSA will intermittently deprive your body of the oxygen it needs, it can often lead to increased blood pressure and heart rate. Oxygen deprivation can also lead to a decrease in your overall quality of sleep.
Besides snoring and intermittent breathing, those with sleep apnea can experience numerous other symptoms that can signify an issue. Some of those symptoms include but are not limited to:
- Morning headaches
- Dry mouth and/or throat
- Insomnia
- Gasping for air as you sleep
- Excessive sleepiness during the day
Important Next Steps
There are multiple options available if you have sleep apnea, and you can schedule an appointment with Dr. Fotek to conclude which one is best for you. Diagnosis is necessary to conclude the root cause of the obstructive sleep apnea.
The most common treatments available include either oral appliance therapy or NightLase®. Using a laser is a non-invasive treatment that contracts the collagen that would otherwise be blocking your airway. It is safe, fast and painless, does not need any anesthesia and only requires 3, 15-minute sessions, 3 weeks apart.
Those treatment modalities are also used for patients using a CPAP device. It is a complimentary procedure to CPAP as it can reduce the amount of oxygen or airflow needed. Dr. Fotek will also often use Nightlase® in combination with a custom-made snore appliance that the patient will use while sleeping.
Call us to schedule a consultation to see if we can help you improve the quality of your sleep!
We also offer our patients a new in-home sleep study called SleepImage. It is worn like a ring or watch in the privacy of your own home. The device helps detect sleeping patterns, snoring, interruptions, and breathing difficulties during sleep.
